A change of character (CHoCH) is the first break of structure against the prevailing trend. In a downtrend, price keeps making lower highs and lower lows. When a candle finally closes above the most recent lower high, the character of the move has changed for the first time. That does not prove the trend has reversed, but it is the earliest structural warning that sellers may be losing control. This guide explains what a CHoCH is, how it differs from a break of structure (BOS), how to judge a good one from a weak one, and how to avoid the most common mistakes.
What a change of character means
A trend has a pattern. In a downtrend the pattern is lower highs and lower lows, and every rally fails below the previous peak. A CHoCH is the first time that pattern is broken: price closes above the last lower high, or, in an uptrend, closes below the last higher low. If you need a refresher on swings and trend structure, read what market structure is and bullish vs bearish market structure.
The word "character" is about behaviour. Until now, buyers could not push price beyond the last lower high. When they finally do, the behaviour has changed. It is a warning, and it may or may not lead to a full reversal. Many CHoCHs fail within a few candles, which is why they are judged by quality and not just by occurrence.
A bullish CHoCH step by step
The chart below shows a downtrend with two lower highs and two lower lows. Price then rallies and closes above the last lower high. That close is the CHoCH.

- Identify the trend. Mark at least two lower highs and two lower lows.
- Find the last lower high. This is the swing that, until now, capped every rally.
- Wait for a candle close above it. A wick alone is not enough.
After the CHoCH, you want to see what the new market does next. A later break above the next swing high in the new direction is a BOS, and it is the confirmation that a new uptrend is forming.
CHoCH vs BOS: same break, different meaning
Both terms describe a close beyond a swing, so they are easy to confuse. The difference is the direction relative to the existing trend.

| BOS | CHoCH | |
|---|---|---|
| Direction | With the current trend | Against the current trend |
| What it suggests | The trend is continuing | The trend may be weakening or reversing |
| Typical use | Trade pullbacks in the trend direction | Prepare for a possible reversal and wait for confirmation |
| Reliability | Usually higher, as it follows the trend | Lower on its own, so it needs context |

How to judge a CHoCH: four checks
Not all changes of character are equal. A break from a few small candles near the middle of a range is very different from a strong move out of a key level. These four checks help you decide how seriously to take one.
