CHoCH Explained: Spotting a Possible Market Trend Change

A Change of Character (CHoCH) describes a break against the market's recent structural direction. For example, during an uptrend, a decisive break below a meaningful higher low may warn that bullish control is weakening. It is an alert to reassess the structure, not proof that a full reversal has already happened.

How traders read CHoCH

  1. Identify the existing structure and the swing that supports it.

  2. Wait for price to break a meaningful opposing swing.

  3. Check whether the break is decisive and whether a candle close confirms it under your rules.

  4. Look for follow-through, a retest, or additional evidence before considering an entry.

CHoCH versus BOS

BOS is commonly used for a break in the direction of the current structure, while CHoCH is commonly used for a break against it. Terminology varies between trading educators, so define the exact swing and confirmation rules you use and apply them consistently.

What can invalidate the idea?

Price may quickly reclaim the broken level, remain inside a range, or produce a false break around news and low-liquidity periods. Place invalidation where the trade idea is no longer valid, not at an arbitrary distance, and size the position accordingly.

Use CHoCH as one piece of analysis alongside timeframe context, liquidity, and a pre-defined risk plan. No structure signal guarantees a reversal.
